Are toddler mattresses different from crib mattresses?

Shopping for mattresses was never as easy as it is now. With numerous stores, online and otherwise, there are more options now, than ever before. From standard or custom size mattresses that fit cribs and full size beds, from foam to innerspring to organic mattresses, you have choices that suit different budgets and needs.

Time and tide wait for no one. The young baby that the nurse handed to you in the hospital has outgrown the crib and it is now time for you to look for a bed for his size and a mattress to fit it.

Good quality cribs have crib hangers that allow the floor of the crib to be lowered so that the baby does not tip over as he grows in height. As your baby grows you can keep lowering the floor to suit his height. But ultimately he is bound to outgrow the crib and you will have to make a new purchase.

Parents often find themselves in a dilemma whether to buy a toddler size bed and mattress or opt for a full sized bed when it comes to this transition. A changeover from the crib to a toddler bed suits the nursery better than a full sized bed. While selecting a crib mattress you would have probably ensured the firmness of the mattress. If you had made a good choice of foam or innerspring or a safe organic crib mattress, it would probably still be in good shape and firm enough. And in some cases, the crib mattress may fit toddler size beds.

Toddlers are liable to roll over during sleep and fall from the bed. Whatever the size of the bed, make sure that there are provisions for bed rails to prevent an accident. It takes time to toilet train a baby. Since some babies may not learn as fast the others, bedwetting is another aspect of growing up that you need to be careful about. If the toddler mattress is not already waterproofed you can go for extra waterproof sheets to prevent urine from seeping into the mattress.

The matter of transition from a crib to a bigger bed is not that big a problem if you choose a toddler bed. Of course, if you want to go in for a full sized bed for your kid you have to look for a full sized mattress too.
