Inattentive type of ADHD is characterized by a behavior that is not overtly active. The children suffering from the inattentive type of ADHD are not disruptive and hence parents and teachers find them are easier to manage. As a result, it becomes very difficult to diagnose this condition. Apart from this, not many scientific studies have been conducted that specifically examine the response to ADHD treatment of children who have been diagnosed with this type of ADHD.

The earlier researches on ADHD have proven that lack of concentration, coupled with apparent lack of effort on part of the child are the main characteristics of the inattentive type of ADHD. As a result, generally such children may be earmarked as slow learners. These children normally are underachievers and it is ironical that no one is aware of their true potential. Such children are also shown to have social problems. It has been observed that the children suffering from the inattentive type of ADHD generally do not have the knowledge of the social skills. As a result, such children have a problem with handling daily social interactions and hence may be rejected by their peers.

Let us look at some of the researches that have been conducted on inattentive type ADHD in the recent past. Experts agree that there are many reasons that can lead to occurrence of ADHD in children. In one of the clinical studies, it was found that prenatal exposure to nicotine can lead to occurrence of inattentive type ADHD. It was also found that this condition is associated with polymorphism at the adrenergic a2A receptor gene. In another pharmacogenomic study, it was reported that adrenergic a2A receptor gene was associated with methylphenidate improvement of inattentive symptoms in children with ADHD. This association has opened up a new dimension to the treatment of inattentive type ADHD, though it needs to be studied further. In another independent survey study, it emerged that the inattentive type of ADHD normally occurs at a later age than other types of ADHD. Though other types of ADHD have an onset by the age of seven; in many cases inattentive type of ADHD may not become apparent till about nine years of age. In the same study, it was reported that though other types of ADHD is more common in boys; the inattentive type of ADHD is more evenly distributed between boys and girls.

The line of treatment followed for inattentive type of ADHD is same as that for the other types of ADHD and stimulants are the most commonly prescribed drug. However, new research that is being sponsored by the National Institute of Health is underway to establish the effectiveness of stimulants in children diagnosed with inattentive type of ADHD.

Till the time that a different line of treatment is identified for inattentive type of ADHD, it is imperative that the parents evaluate all the forms of existing treatments that includes behavioral therapy. Of late, Natural Remedies for ADHD treatment, especially natural medicines for ADHD have been gaining prominence.
