Flat Warts in Children

Flat warts are benign tumors and they usually occur in children. Flat warts are only about the size of a pinhead and end in a point off the skin. They are smoother than other kinds of warts and have flat tops.

Flat warts can affect any area of the body but usually appear on the face, fingers, hands, arms and knees and sometimes in clusters with as many as a hundred together. Even though flat warts are so small, they may have a negative effect on the child’s self image and occasionally they itch or hurt.

There are many other names given to flat warts such as juvenile warts, periungual warts, plantar warts, verrucas and subungual warts. Flat warts are similar to the color of the skin and can therefore be pink, light brown or yellow. They are never blue and you can safely ignore the - old wives tale - that frogs and toads can give you warts.

What Causes Flat Warts?

Flat Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. There are at least sixty types of HPV viruses. Scratching or picking flat warts can spread them through the blood stream so it is important to prevent children from doing this.

All You Want to Know About Psoriatic Arthritis

Although the cause of Psoriasis is not entirely understood, scientists have suggested that it may be caused by a malfunctioning immune system. The affects of the disease is mainly thought of as a skin condition but it does affect joints too.

Psoriatic arthritis is the type of psoriasis where the joints are swollen, painful and stiff very similar to arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis can be serious, causing bone loss as well as deformed joints. A statistic from the National Psoriasis foundation put an estimate of about 10% - 30% on the number of people with psoriasis who also have psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriatic mainly affects adults but it can occur in children. Psoriatic arthritis can only happen to individuals who have psoriasis. The existence of psoriasis usually surfaces before symptoms of psoriatic arthritis but occasionally the psoriatic arthritis occurs first.

Typically the one happens years before the other. This stretch of time between the two is what makes diagnosing it difficult for doctors. The debilitating aspects of psoriatic arthritis are the worse part of psoriasis; especially if left untreated.

Nix the Itch of Summer

Article courtesy of Mountain Rose Herbs

Much as we love nature, outdoor encounters sometimes put us face to face with burns, itches and ouches. Herbal remedies can help.

With the joy of gardening comes the challenge of fending off biting bugs, harmful sunrays and irritating plant oils, as well as healing the damage to our skin. To be well and at ease outdoors, we humans just have to be smarter than the natural forces that surround us.

With a little planning and discipline — plus the tips and recipes we offer here — you can make it through this summer with minimal impact to the skin you’re in.

Defend Your Skin

Our first line of defense is internal. Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated in hot weather. During the gardening season, eat garlic and increase your intake of vitamin C for energy and a healthy immune system. If you notice the beginning of a poison ivy rash, or get some bug bites, use Echinacea tincture for several days to boost your immune system.

Your level of protection may depend on the type of gardening you do, and the length of time you spend in the garden.

Eczema Remedy for Baby?

Question:

My 5 month old has eczema on face & patches on body?

Tried everything inc cortisone nothing works. Any sugestions for home remedies or home made ointments? Is affecting his sleeping as he cant stop itching.

We don’t use any soaps or fragrences on him or anything that comes into contact with him. We only use Alpha Keri bath oil and moisterisor and occasionaly parafin. The cortisone is only 1% but realy dont like using it so dont think I would increase the cortisone strength.

It is definately eczema - it started appearing at just 2 days old when still at hospital and only breastfed. Recently spent a week in hopsital for unrelated problems and peads couldn’t offer me any more advice and waiting list for dermatologist in our area is huge…..

Answer:

First off, please, please, be sure to ask your baby’s doctor about the safety of any and all natural remedies you are advised to try - natural does NOT mean ’safe’.

That said, there are some good natural remedies - which I found here: http://www.remedies4.com/download/remedi…

Candida and Eczema Remedies

Out of the nearly 100 symptoms that Candida is capable of causing, the most common are skin ailments like eczema, psoriasis and acne. Candida infection must necessarily be considered as one of the causes on eruption of any skin problem.

Understanding how Candida makes deep roots in our bodies is not difficult. The two main causes of Candida are the intake of foods that help Candida to grow and a weak immune system.

Candida is controlled by good bacteria and as long as the good bacteria are able to control adequately, Candida remains in the body in its benign form. Too much of sugar, carbohydrates, commercial foods that contain additives, and acidic foods tend to provide a healthy environment for Candida to proliferate, permeate through the intestinal walls and colonize in the rest of the body.

The immune system is capable of protecting the body from most of the infections. It uses its defensive weapon first. Although painful, inflammation is the first defense that it uses. Along with that the offensive weapon of killing the foreign invader is launched and the infection cleared.

Psoriasis and Children

Psoriasis is a common skin condition where the skin develops areas which become thick and covered with silvery scales. A common problem in the United States, the course of psoriasis varies greatly, but in most sufferers it is a chronic problem which continues for many years. The presence of psoriasis can cause emotional distress in most sufferers.

Considered a skin disorder, psoriasis is actually the result of a disordered immune system. The T-cells are a type of white blood cell and become over stimulated. The cells then direct the skin to attempt to heal a non-existent injury. The skin reacts in the same way it does when there is a fungus infection present. It then grows very quickly, trying to grow the infection off of the skin. These areas then become the reddened and inflamed patches with white scale on them.

Typically, when young people develop psoriasis, it not only affects them physically, but emotionally also. Psoriasis may influence how the view and interact with the world, the activities they take part in, and the people they seek out as friends and the interests they develop. Children may be apprehensive about their psoriasis getting worse or recurring.

Is Vegetable Oil Making Your Acne Worse?

In nearly every beauty magazine, every TV program, or every radio hour you are sure to hear or see some sort of advertisement for an acne removal product. Each one promises to get rid of your acne and keep it away, leaving you with the smooth, clear skin of the models who are advertising the product (and probably never had acne a day in their lives).

Every year, the acne medication industry makes millions of dollars selling one expensive acne treatment after another. And acne sufferers continue to buy the products, hoping that eventually one will work and help them have the clearer skin that they are longing for. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the “cures” will not do more than offer temporary relief, since they do not deal with the underlying cause of the acne. So if you have acne, you might want to take a second look at all the creams, washes, and pills unless you know that they are going to take care of the reason why you have acne.

Treatment Approach for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a disorder of the skin that affects over 6 million residents of the United States. Research has not definitively established what causes psoriasis, but some recent studies have indicated that it may be in immune-mediated disorder. Psoriasis occurs when the body generates too many skin cells.

Normal skin typically matures within a 28 to 30 day time period, but cells in the psoriatic skin area matures within less than one week. Psoriasis can change from one type to another and has been known to have several types active on a person at the same time. Psoriasis flare ups may improve and go into remission only to return later.

There are many different treatments available to help control psoriasis. Some can be found over the counter at a drugstore while others require a prescription. No single treatment works for everyone so the goal is to find a treatment that works the best for each individual case with the fewest side effects.

Topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed treatments for psoriasis. They are synthetic drugs which resemble naturally occurring hormones in the body and are available in varying strengths and formulations including lotions, creams, solutions, sprays, gels, and ointments. Corticosteroids act by slowing down the growth of skin cells and decreasing the inflammation of lesions in patients with psoriasis.

Should you use an antibiotic to treat acne?

In persistent cases of acne that do not respond to topical treatment, an antibiotic alternative is usually exercised by doctors. An antibiotic is a drug, synthetic or natural, that kills bacterial proteins while inhibiting bacterial growth alongside.

If it was limited to this action, antibiotics would be the most preferred treatment for numerous bacterial disorders including acne. However, antibiotics cannot differentiate between bacterial proteins and cellular proteins that are part of the body cells. And this is what causes the negative effects of antibiotics, commonly known as side effects.

Tetracycline is the most common and the first-use antibiotic for acne. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic and also the least expensive. Tetracycline and its derivative, Doxycycline, are taken on an empty stomach or at least two to three hours after meals as food restricts absorption of the drug. Minocycline, another tetracycline derivative, on the other hand is easily absorbed and can be taken with food.

Tetracycline has the least side effects. But over time, there has been an increased antibiotic resistance towards the drug and it does not seem to work as well these days. This necessitated the development of its derivatives. Doxycycline makes the skin sensitive to sun requiring sun protection every time you go out. Both the derivatives also tend to cause gastrointestinal problems.

Topical creams and antibiotic treatment for teenage acne

The presence or absence of acne is one of the most prominent factors that can affect the self confidence of teenagers. Considering the emphasis that modern society places on good looks, one ugly looking pus spot that makes an appearance early in the morning is enough to spoil the day for your teen.

The fact that acne mostly occurs at puberty points to the fact that it is caused by various hormonal changes that are inevitable during adolescence. The sites where tiny hairs exist on the face or the body are most likely to be affected with acne.

The oil glands associated with these hairs become overly active when the male hormone testosterone acts upon them at puberty. Testosterone is normally present in small quantities in women too. Sometimes the level of this male hormone increases abnormally, causing acne in women.

Acne is basically an inflammation of the skin. The most common cause of acne is an oily skin that leads to proliferation of bacteria, which the body recognizes as foreign invasion. To combat this, the immune system secretes hormone-like substances known as inflammatory mediators. This is the main indication of a link between the immune system health and acne.
