The World Of Motherhood

Teens and Diabetes

If you are a teen and have diabetes you already complicated teen life can be even more involved as you deal with your disease and the feelings that you have about living with diabetes.

Teens just want to fit in with their peers and anything that makes them feel different is going to make their life difficult. Dealing with diabetes means having to test blood glucose levels on a regular basis, eating a meal plan specific to your diabetic needs, and perhaps giving yourself an insulin shot, missing school or social events due to medical appointments and sometimes not feeling well while at school due to low blood sugar or high blood sugar.

It can be especially rough if the teen is in a family with siblings who do not have diabetes and they can have feelings of anger for having to deal with diabetic issues when their siblings seem to have a relatively carefree life.

Teens often ask, “Why me?” or “What Have I done to deserve to have to deal with all of this?”

Being Well Informed About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is less common than Type 2 Diabetes. It generally affects children, teens and youth. In the United States the usual age for diagnosis is around age 14. Type 1 Diabetes is when there is a deficiency or lack of insulin in the body.

The pancreatic cells quit producing insulin for an unknown reason. When there is not enough insulin in the blood, the blood glucose level rises unchecked. Symptoms of hyperglycemia can result from a too-high glucose level in the blood.

Hyperglycemia is when blood glucose levels are too high. The meaning is from hyper meaning high, glyc meaning glucose, and emia meaning blood. Common symptoms of hyperglycemia are blurred vision, fatigue, weight loss, poor wound healing, dry mouth, dry or itchy skin, and male impotence, and also recurring infections.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder so the body actually creates the disease. Experts believe that the potential for developing Type 1 Diabetes is a genetic tendency or perhaps triggered by a viral infection such as having influenza, mumps, rubella, measles, or encephalitis.

Two individuals both coming down with the same virus and only one of the two (the one genetically prone to diabetes) will actually develop diabetes and the other will not.

A Child is Diagnosed With Diabetes

The diagnosis of diabetes in a child can lead to a variety of emotions in the child, siblings or the adults in the family including anger, sadness, and guilt. These feelings are completely normal.

Most children are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which means there are going to be a lot of adaptations to make on a daily basis including what foods are eaten, the daily physical activity level, and how they manage caring for their disease like giving shots and taking other medications, monitoring blood glucose level, getting enough sleep and caring for their body.

Children with diabetes can lead normal lives and can be healthy as long as they and those who care for them learn how to manage the disease. An older child can even learn how to do much of his or her diabetic care by herself or himself, with education about the disease and by gaining confidence in their ability to handle things.

It is important for kids to know that they are not alone and that there are other kids who also have diabetes. A child has a lot to learn about diabetes and how to live with it. When a child receives the diagnosis of diabetes it affects the entire family.
