Crying is a normal event in the lives of all babies.When a baby comes out of the woomb the first thing to do is crying. By the first cry he will take some air in to the lungs for the first time in their life.
After delivery if the baby does not cry then it should be initiated by slightly pinching or gently stroking the feet. From this it is clear that the healthy baby should cry and it is a normal physiological event, still some times it can upset the mother or family members.
We all know that a baby can’t tell his needs or troubles in words. The only way for him to communicate with others is by crying.Babies show some other signs like feet kicking,hand waving and head turning, etc. But the best way to take the attention of others is by crying.
Excessive crying may not have a firm definition because the crying habit changes from baby to baby and some babies can be calmed easily but some are difficult to soothe. If crying is distressing for the mother and home nurse it can be called excessive.

From the first moment the infant is applied to the breast, it must be nursed upon a certain plan. This is necessary to the well-doing of the child, and will contribute essentially to preserve the health of the parent, who will thus be rendered a good nurse, and her duty at the same time will become a pleasure.
This implies, however, a careful attention on the part of the mother to her own health; for that of her child is essentially dependent upon it. Healthy, nourishing, and digestible milk can be procured only from a healthy parent; and it is against common sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, nevertheless, provide as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her child, as if she were diligently attentive to these important points. Every instance of indisposition in the nurse is liable to affect the infant.

As has been expected for months, the FDA has issued a warning stating that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are too risky for children under the age of 2. The warning states that “serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur.”
Most drug companies have already stopped selling versions of nonprescription cold remedies which are targeted specifically at babies and toddlers. Recent surveys, however, suggest that many parents don’t believe OTC remedies can pose a problem, especially if they’ve given them to an older child without harm.
The FDA has still not decided if OTC decongestants, antihistamines and cough suppressants are appropriate for older children.

When your child is teething it is never easy, for the child or the parent. This blend may help to take the ‘edge’ off your little ones’ anguish.
* 3ml Lavender (Lavendula angustifolium)
* 2ml Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)
Combine these two oils together in a dark 5ml bottle, seal and invert to blend. This blend can then be added to a massage oil (using the chart above) for gentle massages before bedtime. Cool compresses of either Lavender or Chamomile hydrosols along the jawline may also be helpful to relieve the irritation.

Colic, unexplained, persistent crying in healthy babies, which affects 10-50% of all babies in their first three months of life, often leaves parents “ready to try almost anything”. In New York City, where 60% of newborns now have at least one foreign-born parent, natural options for treating colic from around the world pass among immigrants, and are tried even by parents whose own ancestors “came over on the Mayflower”.
Author Nina Bernstein talked with pediatricians and parents from a variety of cultural backgrounds about colic remedies. Tight swaddling, warm baths, belly bands, and cowrie shell bracelets have all taken their place alongside such traditional American “machine age” methods as long rides in the car. Some are now found in copyrighted, mass-market versions such as “Miracle Blanket”, “Lull-a-Band” , or teddy bears which mimic womb sounds). Many colic remedies are herbal, and involve either teas or massage oils, reflecting, one health administrator said, “a population that isn’t used to popping pills to deal with pain”.

Parents are never sure of the precautions that they should take to ensure the safety of their infants. To add to the concerns, they frequently hear news that inadequate safety measures (and not SIDS) are the actual reasons behind the increase in infant deaths. Nothing can be more unsettling for parents who are concerned with the safety of their newborn.
Governmental institutions publish standards for cribs and crib beddings regularly. However, when we go out shopping somehow or the other, factors like price and appearance of the product take over and safety is relegated to a corner. The irony is that this happens not only with the uninformed but also with parents who are conversant with safety regulations and are primarily concerned about safety of their child.
An exceptionally large blanket can potentially lead to the same hazardous affect as a soft mattress or a pillow that traps exhaled carbon dioxide and leads to re-breathing by an infant in the crib.
