Infants are obligated to breathe through their nose till they reach an age of approximately 2 months. Any obstruction in the nasal passage can cause great discomfort and prevent the child from feeding or sleeping properly. The lack of oxygen also affects the growth of the child negatively.
Parents should identify such a condition quickly and take corrective measures immediately.
Some sort of a nasal obstruction is extremely common among newborns. These can result from a swelling in the nose or an accumulation of serous fluid. An inflammation caused by an accumulation of watery fluid in tissues and cells is called edema.
If the cause of blockage is due to an edema, a simple suction process can help in clearing the opening. The process of suction is a simple one in which all a mother needs to do is to use a rubber syringe. One needs to insert the nozzle of the syringe into the nose, press the rubber bulb and then leave it to allow suctioning. Though the process is simple, it may need some steadfastness on the part of a mother who is undertaking this process for the first time.

Often when people are experiencing insomnia they are quick to grab an over the counter medication in the hopes of remedying the problem. These medications can have more negative effects than anything else.
Therefore, many turn to herbal remedies and attempt to battle their insomnia in a more natural fashion. There are several herbal choices that can be extremely beneficial in treating insomnia.
Many of the herbal remedies that are on the market today actually mirror some prescription drugs minus the sometimes complicated and unpleasant side effects. For example, many use St. John Wort for anxiety rather than going on some other drug like Zoloft, Paxil, or Prozac.
The leaves of the catnip plant are known to cause sedation in humans. The only problem with this approach is that there is no designated dose to take, however it is safe for humans to consume.
Because of the problem with accurate doses, it is not a good idea for small children to use it and also it should not be used by women who are pregnant.

Even though a large proportion of children in the United States suffer from symptoms of ADD, scientists and doctors have yet to come up with conclusive causes for ADD. There was a time when people blamed parents for a child that exhibited signs of ADD since it was considered that the cause for ADD was poor upbringing. But further research has proven that the causes for ADD are more likely to be biological ones and are not related to parenting and rearing.
Another cause of symptoms that required child adhd treatment was thought to be a minor brain trauma due to a small accident or difficulties during birth. This is why ADD was often referred to as minimal brain damage or dysfunction. But extensive research has proved that this could explain only a few cases and many children that required ADD treatment had no history of a traumatic birth or even minor accidents.
The theory that is being propounded these days is that ADD is probably caused due to biological reasons. It has been seen through PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanning that certain parts of the brain among children suffering from ADD are reduced by about ten percent. These parts that control attention use less glucose and are therefore less active.

Flat warts are benign tumors and they usually occur in children. Flat warts are only about the size of a pinhead and end in a point off the skin. They are smoother than other kinds of warts and have flat tops.
Flat warts can affect any area of the body but usually appear on the face, fingers, hands, arms and knees and sometimes in clusters with as many as a hundred together. Even though flat warts are so small, they may have a negative effect on the child’s self image and occasionally they itch or hurt.
There are many other names given to flat warts such as juvenile warts, periungual warts, plantar warts, verrucas and subungual warts. Flat warts are similar to the color of the skin and can therefore be pink, light brown or yellow. They are never blue and you can safely ignore the - old wives tale - that frogs and toads can give you warts.
What Causes Flat Warts?
Flat Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. There are at least sixty types of HPV viruses. Scratching or picking flat warts can spread them through the blood stream so it is important to prevent children from doing this.

While shopping for babies we usually tend to forget that the baby will soon outgrow the stuff we are buying. Obviously, buying oversized dresses is not an option but there are lots of other items that can be bought in larger sizes to last you for a loner period of time.
Manufacturers of baby products nowadays understand this preference for larger sizes and therefore market products that are slightly larger in size to parents of newborns too. Baby towels, crib sheets, quilts and blankets are some such baby items that can be bought in larger sizes since they can be used now and later when the baby grows into a toddler.
A baby towel wrap can serve the purpose of a baby towel as well as a toddler bath towel. Towel wraps are oversized baby towels that are big enough to wrap your baby completely.
Whatever design or style you choose, make sure that the towel fabric is terry cloth and made of organic cotton. Cotton is a natural absorbent and helps in quick drying after a bath.
One design of towel wrap is a simple towel with Velcro fasteners so that you can wrap the baby securely and put him somewhere till you look around for his dress.

The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are so varied in nature that no two people exhibit a similar set of symptoms. Some people may show extreme passivity as a reflection of their condition whereas in others it may manifest itself in aggressive hyperactivity.
The American Psychiatric Association based in Washington DC details out fourteen symptoms of ADD that can be used a checklist to understand and determine the presence of the condition. Out of these fourteen symptoms, eight need to be present in the individual as a child for child ADD or child ADHD treatment to be meted out.
ADD is fairly prevalent among children about 2 to 5 percent of children in the United States are estimated to be suffering from this condition. Most doctors feel that ADD is something that people do not outgrow and one needs medication and therapy for life, if one is afflicted with this problem. Prescription ADD treatment includes amphetamine and methylphenidate. Boys are at a higher risk than girls to show ADD symptoms. However, it is arguable whether this piece of statistics is flawed due to their general rowdiness and energetic behavior.

You may be surprised to read that ten per cent of children get migraines and this percentage rises amongst teenagers. Migraines in children begin earlier in boys than girls although they are usually affected equally but after puberty, migraines are much more frequent in girls.
Very young children and migraines
At least 20% of those children who are going to have migraines suffer from their first attack before they are five but they don’t always tell you that they have a headache. Very young children experiencing a migraine attack usually look pale and ill and have abdominal pain, vomiting and a strong need to sleep.
They may show their pain and discomfort by irritability, crying, rocking or seeking a dark room in which to sleep. If they vomit, this very often clears the condition and they can sleep it off. Migraines in young children often happen without headaches.
They may have repeated bouts of stomach pain only or they may have photophobia (sensitivity to light) and phonophobia (sensitivity to sound) without either stomach or headache.

Also a great blend to diffuse in a child’s room when they are fighting a cold or the flu due to the antibacterial action of these oils.
* 1ml Lemon (Citrus limonum)
* 2ml Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica)
* 1ml Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata)
* 1ml Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Combine these oils into a 5ml amber glass bottle, seal and invert to blend. Use in a diffuser or blend into a carrier oil (paying attention to the blending chart listed above) and gently massage into the throat/chest area. While they are fighting the infection this can be used up to 3 times per day.

In normal parlance impulsive action is one that is without any forethought. For the purpose of this article though, impulsive behavior refers to a quick, unplanned action without consideration of a possible negative outcome. It also refers to inappropriate behavior in children.
In recent years the medical fraternity has developed psychological tests that involve monitored laboratory performances to measure impulsive behavior. Obviously, these are meant for treating impulsivity in children through different tools like ‘talk therapy’ that many psychiatrists already use. Although psychiatrists are trained to use ‘talk therapy’ as a psychological tool, you too can try to control impulsive behavior in your child at home with the same tool.
If you feel that your child is extremely impulsive, it is important that you first rule out any learning disability that may be forcing your child to resort to thoughtless behavior. Children with learning disabilities are prone to show their frustration by impulsive actions to take out frustration or divert or attract attention.
It is important that you adopt a positive attitude so that you can understand the basics of how to calm impulsive children. Moreover, keeping pace with impulsive children can be extremely tiring - physically as well as mentally. It requires patience, an understanding of child psychology and more patience to assess what factors are responsible for increased impulsivity.

Anxiety disorder has spread its tentacles across people of all the age groups and children are no exception. The pressure to perform in school, excel in extracurricular activities and other social pressures has made them prone to this menace. It is estimated that though anxiety disorders affect around thirteen percent of children, it goes undetected in most cases and hence most of the children suffering from it do not get any treatment for anxiety relief till it reaches a more developed stage.
It is important for children suffering from anxiety disorder, a comprehensive treatment plan should be chalked out including cognitive-behavioral therapy and natural treatments for anxiety. In cases where immediate relief is required, medication can be an effective part of the treatment. While implementing this treatment plan, it is very critical that the progress of the child be monitored through ongoing medical assessment. When prescribed appropriately by a doctor and administered as prescribed, medication may reduce or even eliminate the symptoms of anxiety disorder. However, since these medications can have their side effects also, it is important on part of the parents to ensure the safety of their children. There are some important things to be kept in mind when a child is prescribed medication as part of anxiety or panic attack treatment.
