Varicose veins are generally a dark purple or blue in color and can be found in many different shapes and sizes. They often twist up and down the skin, which is why they are known as “spider veins.”

Body Honey Wrap with Coconut Oil

Inspired by Organic Body Care by Stephanie Tourles (Storey Publishing, 2007). http://www.care2.com/

Honey and coconut oil have both long been used to moisturize the skin. Combine them with this method and you have a super luscious body butter that will leave your skin soft as a cloud. Consider this body honey a Valentine to yourself, or try it on your partner for a special at-home Valentine’s Day surprise.

True natural body care extends beyond basic health and aesthetic concerns to include fun, frolic, physical and tactile pleasures, warm and tender sharing, and a celebration of life. So while this formula does wonders for moisturizing your skin, it can also arouse your senses with yummy tastes and soothing texture.

* 2 tablespoons coconut oil (extra-virgin, unrefined)
* 1 tablespoon of your favorite raw honey
* 2 drops vanilla, peppermint, or sweet orange essential oil (optional)

In a small bowl, whip together all ingredients. This sweet treat is now ready to use.

If the temperature in your kitchen is above 76F, the body honey will maintain a liquid consistency; if the temperature is below 76F, it will be a medium soft solid (because of the melting point of the coconut oil).

Lack of Energy and Varicose Veins…

Question: from Mary

I am 50 years old. I have lupus, currently going through menopause. I really don’t have a lot of energy. Do you have something that would help me? My sex drive is down and I definitely don’t like that. Should I take the Complete Woman supplement that you have? I don’t really like to take a lot of pills, so whatever you suggest.

I am on placquenil. I also take L-lysine, Vit.e, and Vit. C. The doctor told me to start taking Vit D. I take some stuff called venacure for varicose veins (I don’t want to get them and I have a few) Do you have anything for that?

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life Natural Supplements)

I would recommend the below protocol for you to help with your problems:

Total Balance Womens Plus at 6 per day. This provides many needed essential nutrients, helps to increase immunity and antioxidant protection, reduce inflammation, help to increase natural energy and provide a daily balance of nutrients to help strengthen your overall wellness.

The Bilberry, as well as other ingredients in Total Balance may help your varicose veins, as well as the below suggestions, plus the Red clover, amongst others, can help your lupus.

Natural Anti-Aging Treatments for Your Skin

Not long ago, I wrote about one of the newest trends in the very trendy anti-aging category — facial injectables. (See Daily Health News, May 10, 2007.) Worldwide, people now spend more than $1 billion on anti-aging products, and the number of cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections has grown 20% in recent years. But even as aging baby boomers try to beat back time, many are loathe to do anything so drastic as injecting chemicals into their faces… instead they are jumping on the “green wagon” and looking for a more natural approach.

Since I feel the same way myself, I decided to seek advice on the natural front from Jamison Starbuck, ND, a naturopathic physician in family practice and a lecturer at the University of Montana, both in Missoula. She told me that expensive and possibly risky high-tech interventions are not necessary. Healthy, glowing skin at all ages comes from inside. If you take good care of your body, your skin will reflect your good health. I asked her to share her natural strategies for keeping skin youthful.

Frankincense Bath Kisses

These lusciously scented “kisses” are a bath time luxury. Melt one ounce cocoa butter and 2/3 ounce shea butter(available in most health food stores)in a microwave, then add 1/3 ounce sweet almond oil and 1/8 teaspoon each frankincense and sweet orange essential oils.

Pour into small candy molds and place in the freezer for 20 minutes. Remove from molds. Place one or two ‘kisses’ into hot bath water. Store the rest in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

Cooling Body Splashes

Inspired by Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair, by Dina Falconi (Ceres Press, 1998). http://www.care2.com/

Some of us head for the river when we need cooling relief, but if you don’t have a river nearby, try these simple refreshers instead: they’re easy to make and fun to splash on, with special ingredients to tone and deodorize, lift your mood and revitalize you.

Basic Body Splash Method

* 2 ounces distilled water
* 20 drops essential oil of choice (we recommend eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender)

1. Find a glass bottle with a misting pump spray top (you can find old perfume bottles at garage sales or thrift shops–just be sure to wash them out very well–or you can buy new bottles online.)

2. Add the oil drop by drop to the water. Shake before every use. May be stored in the fridge for extra cooling!

Peppermint Water

* 2 ounces distilled water
* 20 drops essential oil of peppermint

Follow directions above.

Sensual Body Splash

* 2 ounces distilled water
* 10 drops essential oil of sandalwood
* 10 drops essential oil of ylang ylang

Follow directions above.

Non-surgical products for sagging skin due to weight loss

The skin, like the rest of the body, has a system of restoring damages by itself. A classical example of this is the self-healing process that starts when wounds are closed by clotting, contraction and the production of new cells. This is known as biological skin tightening that involves fibroblasts, the skin’s repair cells that pull collagen strands together.

Some weight loss solutions end up being more effective than they should. For example, regular exercising in conjunction with a natural weight loss program may result in a weight loss faster than the commensurate muscle build up. The skin may sag in such cases.

Sagging skin that occurs after rapid weight loss is different from sagging skin due to old age. It is a problem caused due to the fact that your skin does not fit the new size of your body anymore. Surgical treatments to correct this condition involve plastic surgery that can include numerous operations that are quite expensive. Non surgical options include products like creams and dietary supplements that are not so tough on the pocket.
