You finally lost all that weight you have been trying to lose like forever! Now you notice that you have a lot of loose, hanging skin.

When individuals who are obese and lose between 100 and 200 pounds the result of that much weight lost results in hanging loose skin on the abdomen, arms, breasts, and thighs. The hanging skin can present hygiene issues and can also restrict physical participation.

In order to overcome these issues individuals seek the help of a plastic surgeon who can perform cosmetic surgery to correct the loose and hanging skin. The reshaping of their body usually requires a staged surgical schedule.

A typical body re-contouring begins with an extended abdominoplasty or body lift. Then liposuction of the torso and lower extremities is usually carried out later in time after the body has healed from the abdominoplasty. It is recommended that cosmetic surgery only be performed on those who have made a commitment to maintain the weight loss to avoid wasting time and money on the cosmetic surgery.

There are many ways to deal with loose hanging skin including abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck, breast lift, or breast reduction, and in males gynecomastia excision, upper arm lift, medial thigh lift and a lower body lift and also a sub-mental liposuction, or liposuction of the neck and jowls.

Other procedures that can help to alleviate the problems of hanging skin are liposuction and facelift surgery.

One obstacle to receiving cosmetic surgery for loose and hanging skin is the cost of the cosmetic surgeries. Most insurance companies do not reimburse for recontouring procedures because they are not medically necessary, leaving patients to self-pay. S

taged surgeries such as what is typically required in these cases require multiple surgeries and multiple recoveries which is costly not to mention the time off from work that is required for the recovery period for each of the surgeries.

Doctors generally advice patients who are facing a significant weight loss to:

Lose enough weight so that they are as close as possible to the ideal weight for their height. This generally takes approximately two years to achieve this is they are having weight loss surgery.

Doctors than ask patients to maintain a stable weight for at least 3 consecutive months. Patients than design a surgery plan with their cosmetic surgeon that will allow them to achieve their body contouring goals.

Doctors also advice patients to eat a well-balanced diet that is healthy and to exercise on a daily basis. It is also important for individuals to have a realistic body-contouring goal that takes into consideration your age, extent of loss of skin elasticity, the areas of the body that is affected, and other health conditions.

Staged outpatient procedures are usually done using general anesthesia in a hospital outpatient center or office-based surgical facility for those patients who are receiving body-recontouring surgery. Recovery is typically one to two weeks.
