The choices available for crib mattresses may be more than they were before but choosing the right one for your baby, still requires a fair amount of deliberation. In today’s environment of numerous brands it is difficult to make a choice. Considering that your choice can have a great impact on the health of your baby, it is imperative that you make the right choice.

Mostly, brands try touching a soft nerve of the parents and focus upon sound sleep of the baby. Parents do value a sound sleeping baby since it allows them to sleep themselves without fear of having to wake up in the middle of the night. But marketing compulsions usually force marketers to conceal other points that may be crucial for your baby’s growth.

* Avoid extra soft mattresses at all costs. Soft mattresses do not support the baby’s bones. There is also a risk of the baby’s nose and mouth getting engulfed in the mattress and this can lead to choking or suffocation. Density and compression are the two basics that determine the firmness of a foam mattress. The correct proportion of both ensures the durability as well as the firmness of the foam.

* The firmness of innerspring mattresses depends upon the number of coils used. Choose a mattress that has a high number of coils that are made from thicker steel. It will be more durable, firmer and comfortable.
Ensure that the covers are made from a multi-ply fabric and are water proof.

* Check the size of the crib carefully before actually ordering. There should be no ugly gaps between the mattress and the walls of the crib. The baby may get stuck and hurt himself.

* Prefer a crib mattress that can be converted to a toddler’s mattress. This helps you save money as your baby outgrows the crib.

* Try to avoid discount stores. Compromising on quality simply to save money may mean compromising on the health of your darling baby.

* More vents on the sides means the mattress will remain fresher by passing out odors.

* Try to avoid mattresses made of synthetic materials as they are harmful to the delicate body of a Newborn.

Crib mattresses should not only be comfortable for the baby to sleep but also hygienic and conducive to a healthier growth. Safe organic crib mattresses provide a better environment for your baby. Made of organic cotton and wool, organic crib mattresses are untouched by synthetic materials, chemicals or harmful allergy causing compounds during the entire manufacturing processes. These are a bit expensive but yet provide good value for money and save infants from the negative effects that synthetic materials are known for.
