Alternative medicine is finding itself in the unenviable position of playing arbiter to warring camps in the vaccination debate. Unless you have lived under a rock, you must be aware of the hot debate surrounding vaccinations. Proponents urge continued vaccinations as a means to prevent common diseases.
Opponents assert that vaccinations could be linked to an assortment of detrimental disorders and conditions. In the area of child rearing, vaccinations – like no other topic – are the means of disagreements even among parents and within families. Even as anyone is willing to concede the advantages, at least in theory, there are plenty of detractors who claim that currently used vaccines are not safe enough for mass consumption.
Pediatric physicians are working hard to encourage parents to bring in their children for needed vaccinations, and in order to ensure that money is not a deciding factor when it comes to keeping kids healthy, the oftentimes schedule low cost and even no cost childhood vaccination events. Even so, some parents are still resistant and it is not the money that prevents them from protecting their children with the appropriate vaccines, but it is the idea that their vaccinations are unsafe.
Countless studies are showing the opposite, but there is little that can truly dissuade a parent who has dug in her heels. This of course is deeply seated in the presupposition that although readily available, parents elect to not have a child be protected against health problems because they might feel that these potential diseases are all but eradicated.
This is a myth that is gradually becoming debunked, but it is taking a toll on the alternative medicine community. You see parents in desperate search for a justification to elect not to have vaccinations given for eventualities they do not anticipate, are citing alternative medicine.
Take for example the parent whose child is unlikely to get in contact with any friends suffering from measles. It makes little sense to this parent to vaccinate for measles and as such they might opt for an oblique article published under the heading of alternative medicine that warns parents away from vaccinating for a disease their child is unlikely to contract any time soon.
This of course is decidedly shortsighted – after all, measles could be contracted at any time during childhood and adulthood – and no alternative medicine practitioner would ever make such a suggestion.
There is always the one time their little one gets in contact with an infected child or a carrier, and before you know it, they are suffering greatly from measles and whatever other diseases their parents failed to vaccinate them against. This has led to alternative medicine practitioners coming out in droves suggesting that they are not taking sides in the vaccination debate, and hotly disagree with having their form of medicine used as a convenient excuse to keep a child from receiving the kinds of protections that pediatricians are recommending.
To this end, parents who choose not to vaccinate their children against a host of childhood diseases should do so out of their own understanding and not against the backdrop of mistaken claims made by alleged alternative medicine practitioners.
