The World Of Motherhood

The Five Second Rule

One of the few rules kids (and some adults) actually like to follow is the five second rule.  This rule states that any food that falls on the floor is safe to eat, as long as you pick it back up before you can count to five.  Not only does this “rule” just seem gross, it can make your children sick or even give them food poisoning.

It may seem silly, but there have been various studies testing different aspects of the “five second rule”.  They’ve studied everything from how many germs stay on surfaces to how long it takes them to transfer onto food.  Here are a few things they’ve discovered.

The big issue when it comes to the five second rule is whether floors really are actually dirty.  While many floors have visible dirt, that doesn’t necessarily mean they have bacteria on them, and dirt won’t likely make you very sick if there’s no bacteria in it.  Tests have been done on public floors which have shown them to be fairly clean; however, tests have also been done which show that dirt dropped on the floor can leave enough biological material on the floor to make you sick, and that it stays there for over 24 hours.

Are Hand Sanitizers Healthy?

It used to be that soap and water was the best way to kill germs and keep your family from getting sick.  Recently, all kinds of sanitizing products have come on the market and promise to kill even more germs and prevent the spread of even more disease in your house.  But, with all these new chemicals, you can’t help but wonder if these new sanitizing products are safe for your family.

The biggest concern when it comes to hand sanitizer safety is the alcohol content.  For a sanitizer to be effective against germs, it should contain at least 60% alcohol.  As a comparison, hard liquor is usually about 40%.  If a child eats the hand sanitizer, it only takes a small amount to bring their blood alcohol content to dangerous levels.

Because of its toxicity, it is important to monitor your child’s use of sanitizers.  Be sure to always keep them in a safe place out of reach of your child.  Monitor the sanitizer use so that children don’t ingest it by licking their hands before they’ve dried, and remind them that it is a chemical and it’s not safe to eat.   If your child does get the sanitizer in their mouth, you should call poison control immediately.

How Sleep Disorders Affect Your Family

Having a rare sleep disorder is certainly no fun; you often don’t get adequate sleep, and since the sleep disorder is rare it can sometimes be difficult to get proper treatment.  Since many rare sleep disorders are quite disruptive, your sleep disorder may actually be harder on the family members living with you than it is on you personally.

For example, you probably sleep through any hostile or aggressive behaviors that you display while sleeping, if that is what your rare sleep disorder causes.  The people who live in the same house as you, however, do not have the advantage of sleeping through these events.  To them, the threat is very real and tangible while to you it’s just something that happens while you’re sleeping and you can’t really recall later.

How do you help your family deal with your rare sleep disorder? Even if you are simply unable to get much sleep as a result of your rare sleep disorder then you’re still affecting the people around you in a few ways.  They may hear you wandering around the house at night while they are trying to sleep.  They may spend a great deal of time worrying about your condition.

Successful Time Management Techniques

One of the most successful time management techniques is that of goal setting.  Goals provide many with an important source of needed motivation, as they give you something to specifically aim for.  Whether you set a long-term goal, such as improving the management of your time in general, or a short-term goal, such as showing up for work on time, goals are important.  However, make sure that the time management goals you do set for yourself are realistic.
