How To Feed Your Baby

Every new mom hesitates when it comes to feeding solids. Most pediatricians will agree that most babies are ready for solids at around 6 months of age. You wonder just how successful you will be at feeding your baby? How do you begin solids?

Here are some clues that your baby may be ready to begin solid foods:

Your baby can sit with little or no support.

Your baby can totally control head movement.

Your baby opens his mouth when food comes near it.

His tongue is capable of moving food around on it. Can he get food from the front of the mouth to the back of his mouth?

Once determined that your baby is ready to feed solids, you wll need some equipment:

You will want to introduce foods one at a time. Normally start with rice cereal, than barley cereal. Rice cereal is less likely to have a reaction to it. With each new food allow it to be the only food for about a week.  During this time, keep baby wipes handy. More may go outside the mouth than in it.

Headaches in Children

Children can suffer from headaches too. They can get tension-type headaches, migraines, and headaches from colds and flu as well as organic headaches from tumors, meningitis, and other brain diseases or disorders. Children can also have headaches as a result of head trauma.

If you child complains of a dull ache on one side of the head that is not a sharp pain, but more like a pressure or tightening and if the muscles of the neck and shoulders are tense then what may be happening is a tension-type of headache.

Things that cause tension-type headaches in children are stress, physical strain, hunger, inflammation and a reaction to certain types of food.

Stress, anxiety and depression can cause tension-type headaches in children just like they do in adults. Children get stressed out at school, in sports team participation, after school activities can stress them out and dealing with siblings or parents can stress kids out.

Physical strain can occur as a result of eyestrain or from poor posture.

Driving PMS Away

Premenstrual syndrome, or more commonly known as PMS, is a combination of physical, emotional, and psychological disturbances that occur during the menstrual cycle.  Symptoms include depression, irritability, stress, abdominal bloating and cramps (often referred to as menstrual cramps), crying, insomnia, easily and unpredictable anger, mood swings, skin irritations like acne, respiratory and eye infections among others.

Studies show that about 70-90% of women with menstruation suffer from PMS.  From these figure, about 30-40% have severe symptoms that disrupts their daily activities.

The good news is women who suffer from these symptoms have the power to drive their PMS away.

One of the limitations of successful treatment of PMS from a medical standpoint is that it cannot be diagnosed under laboratory procedures as the blood analysis of one suffering from PMS hardly differ from women who do not have the symptoms.  There are several medical theories that relate PMS to hormonal imbalance, vitamin and other deficiencies, and stress.

Since PMS is part of the menstruation, its treatment is closely associated with that of hormonal imbalance, which is also influenced by several factors like diet, absorption of nutrients, stress levels, and exercises.

Low Libido in Women: The Lack of Sexual Desire

Ten Winter tips for Healthy Living

Winter is often a hard time on your body.  We tend to overlook health concerns and let ourselves go more during the cold winter months.  But don’t let Jack Frost distract you from what’s important.  Here are ten tips to help you stay healthy this winter.

1.  Exercise.  During the winter, we’re much more likely to cut back or cut out exercise.  Be sure to take time at least three days a week (more if possible) to get your heart rate up.  You can go to the gym, play outside with the kids, or even just walk stairs at lunch.

2.  Get more light.  It’s very easy to get depressed over the winter.  One of the best ways to combat this is to get more sunlight.  If you can’t take a vacation to warmer, brighter climates, sit in front of a high watt bulb (250w is good) for 10-20 minutes several times a day if possible.

3.  Protect yourself from cold.  If you do need to venture outside, be sure to bundle up.  Dress in several layers and always protect your bare skin with a coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf.  When coming back inside, allow yourself to warm slowly and wait a few minutes before you remove layers.
