Vitamin D in the News

by Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

Lately Vitamin D has been in the news because of many studies extolling its virtues in helping prevent cancers and other health problems.

I therefore thought that it would be appropriate to remind you that to receive the benefits of Vitamin D it is not simply a matter of heading down to your local health food store and buying a bottle of Vitamin D tablets/capsules! Nor, should you sit back and think “I am OK because I drink milk which has been fortified with Vitamin D” because you won’t be!

Why?

Firstly, let’s consider the Vitamin D in milk (not that you should be drinking milk). Milk is fortified with a synthetic Vitamin D2 known as ‘ergocalciferol’. There is no evidence to support the benefits of this form of Vitamin D. Most if not all fortified foods use this form of synthetic D2.

If you are ingesting Vitamin D it should only be in the form of ‘D3’ which is natural and is called ‘cholecalciferol’. It is found in eggs, some meats and some fish and is the only form that we use in Xtend-Life products including Total Balance.

Understanding the Skin Condition Acne

Acne is a skin condition for which there is fortunately a cure. Approximately 17 million individuals age 12 - 24 have acne in the U.S. Acne although commonly seen in teenagers can strike at any age; even newborns are not immune to acne.

People of all races have to deal with acne at one time or other in their life. Acne is more prevalent in teenagers and young adults causing havoc in their social lives.

Acne usually goes away by age 30, but can return during pregnancy. The skin condition, acne involves the skin’s oil glands and the pores, which are the small holes in the skin’s surface that are connected to the oil glands.

A pimple is formed when the follicle on the skin becomes clogged. The majority of acne appears on the face, but can also appear anywhere on the surface of the skin with the usual places being the back, chest, face, and neck.

There are six types of pimples including whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Whiteheads are pimples that stay under the surface of the skin and are of course white in appearance. Blackheads are pimples that rise to the skin’s surface and are black in appearance.
